Beauty is in the Inner Workings

About four months ago, I did what’s called the “big chop”! That’s a phrase that is popularly used among African American women who have decided to forgo hair relaxers that would alter our natural curl to make it straight. For decades I have used hair relaxers, and my hair was somewhat a medium length. But, recently to get back to my natural texture, I chopped it off! Now instead of sporting 12 inch hair length, it’s more like three inches long when it’s curly. Not everyone was happy with what I did. Many had some unkind comments even if some were indirect. But, consider this… what if I had cancer and lost all of my hair from the treatment? What if I had a disease called Alopecia in which the consequences is hair loss due to my body’s immune system attacking my hair follicles? The most important thing, when the temporary disappears either by personal choice or otherwise, is that my inner person, my heart, is still the same. Though it may become stronger in the ways of the Lord, through such experiences, not basing my value or allowing others to determine my self-worth based on my looks, but tending to what’s on the inside of me is what lasts and what should be honorable unto the Lord. When that’s done, if I lose what’s on the outside, I cannot lose what’s on the inside, which stays with me, and cannot be taken away from me. We get a peek into what’s important to God in 1 Samuel 16:7 NIV; “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ ” This is what we are to model our inner selves after.  This is what is to be evaluated in others, and what others should look for in you.  All after the heart of The Lord.  For in that, child of God, is where your innate joy and firm confidence resides!

Recently you may have been dealing with undue & unGodly criticism of your outward appearance.  Accused of being too thick.  You looked better with your hair…  He’s ugly…  Whatever the remarks have been, be reminded you that you are beautiful the way God made you! Those who negatively comment, expressing disdain for your outer appearance resent something about themselves, in addition to having an “inner spirit” that is not set on the things of God, but instead it is set on fleshly (no pun intended) things. 1 Peter 3:3,4 NIV says; “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” These verses teach us that we are to be concerned with things that are eternal & “unfading”, not temporary as are outward appearances. Of course this does not suggest we walk around unkempt. Nor does it mean, for those of us who have a natural talent and flare for style that we should not enjoy participating in dressing fashionably.  It also does not mean that we should not strive to keep our bodies healthy with periodic exercise and healthy eating habits, for our bodies are the dwelling places of the Spirit of the Most High God.  What these verses are advising is to place worth in that which is most important and lasting. Life is ever changing, as are people and their varying and unique opinions. If you measure your value by your looks, you will be unstable in your opinion of yourself, becoming a human version of a chameleon all in efforts to be accepted. In doing this, you continuously set yourself up for disappointment and exhaustion when you cannot consistently live up to what others expect of you.

In instances where you are in the presence of continuous opinionated negativity, being judged based on your appearance, stand strong in the Word of the Lord! Many blessings have been lost, missed, and forfeited due to choices made that were set upon the shaky and shifting grounds of outward appearances. This issue is not solely relative to personal relationships and outward beauty, but also equally applies to healthcare, educational, and business relationships in regards to race, gender, education level, ethnicity, and socioeconomic standing. You may be an experienced and well-prepared Mexican or African American nurse, but a patient didn’t want your services because you weren’t the race or ethnicity they desired.  Yet, you know in your heart of hearts, you are a Divinely designed nurturer and are great at your job.  I just read about a person who was desperately seeking direction from an adviser, but turned down the person available to him because the available person did not fit his external criteria for an adviser.  As this man experienced others he thought would fill his needs, he found they all came up short.  Could it be the one he’s been rejecting, based on outward appearances, is the very one who holds his blessing?  It certainly is possible.  Despite what a person thinks, despite if they have chosen or chooses to leave for another person who they think “looks” better, be confident in knowing that the most valuable blessing you bring to the people around you is what you carry in your spirit. If that is pleasing in The Lord’s sight and yet is not what they appreciate and see as valuable, let them go. God will send more suitable opportunities your way!

At this day and time, we still need to learn to look beyond what we perceive as external barriers to find the beauty within ourselves that connects us in unity.  As we push forth in that process of finding and living out the unity of the Love of God, when the unnecessary, the temporary, the fading, gets in the way, refuse to be set back. Resist trying to get them back. Renounce the feeling of being taken aback by such types of attack.  Stay in peace with an understanding that it’s not the bling on the outside, but your inner shine is what matters most.  And, simply pray that God will enter the hearts and have His way with your critics. Ignore their hurtful comments, leaving them in the hands of The Father, because you are made in the image & likeness of God, who penned your unique design, weaved you together in your mother’s womb, and spoke forth, “And it is Good!” Be assured that when the Word of the Lord is spoken, the Church says “Amen!” because it is so!

Priceless Artifact Being Restored

Transformation is taking place,

Moving you towards a Godly space,

Where you won’t want to do an about face.

Within yourself you are rising higher,

Wherein the best in you will transpire.

Though God’s miracles work best,

Through which many great blessings manifest,

This process also includes moments of correction

That are never intended for your rejection,

But as an inoculation ensuring your protection

Against the world’s injection of infection.

Effects of life that adhered to you has begun to be chipped away;

Some that is familiar you’ll desperately want to stay.

The pain of it may make you want to chase after what fell,

And salty waters will temporarily overflow from your internal well.

But soon you’ll began to realize the freedom of what is true,

As the exquisite essence of you

Begins to show through.

Understand and in faith be sure,

You have the strength to endure,

As the veil of what others expect to see,

All which is important to society,

Is ripped uncovering who you were truly meant to be.

For it is a necessary part of your destiny!

Metamorphosis is not meant to destroy,

But to bring you innately genuine and unending joy,

As God wants for His child, His baby girl, His baby boy!

Truly let go of the fight!

This is a journey back to delight,

Part of your Divinely inherited right,

Allowing you to walk transparently in the light!

Declare to yourself, “Before I was formed

For the day I would be born

Into a world that would try to redefine

My authentic design

Of the image and likeness in Kind

But was rescued to be refined

To display my original luster and shine.

I am created by the Divine!

I am one of a kind!

I was lost then found and restored

Now I am free

Of debris

That covered over me!

I am being Transformed!”

Face to Face in the Mirror

reflectionEdited“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:26,27 NIV

You’ve heard time and time again that God has great plans for you. The Scripture above reminds us of how God originally made us, empowering us to carry out all that He’d planned for us. You know you are a child of the Most High God and it’s time to step into a more fulfilled and purposeful life… but wait… it’s still not readily perceived where it can be touched planned and lived out. Looking around things still seem the same; you’re still doing things that don’t shine with joy brightly in your heart. Things seem to be stuck on repeat as if you’re reliving each day again and again. Excitement sought in some things are proving to be empty, even depleting at times. There’s a longing in your spirit to know what it’s like to consistently wake up each morning and be excited about the day ahead. And, an even deeper yearning to be so incredibly comfortable with who you are, you can build empires with bricks thrown at you instead of being buried under them. Though you know you are a beloved child of God, you may still have questions about who you are, why you’re here, and what else is in store for you. At this crossroad of your life, it can be tempting to settle, but DON’T! Reconciling with your true inner self isn’t a lost cause, but is simply being missed due to a veil of mist hiding your reflection; a fog that can be wiped away!

This veil is one that’s been placed over your eyes by blinding circumstances and old ways of settling them to survive. It’s an outdated covering that when Christ shed His love for you, He rendered its old practices that only hid the truth, ineffective and unnecessary. Now that you’re under the wings of The Lord, you no longer need to simply survive, living out a daily grind, but can fly to new heights and thrive! It just takes a little focus.

“But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 NIV

The Message Bible version of 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 reads:

“Whenever, though, they turn to face God as Moses did, God removes the veil and there they are—face-to-face! They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We’re free of it! All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. And so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.”

God desires for you to be a participant in the plan He’s laid out for you, but you don’t have to do all the work alone. He’ll remove all that blocks your eyes from recognizing the beautiful Truth of who you are in Him! He only asks that you seek to get to know Him deeper than just knowing Him as God. He is accessible through prayer, His Word, and His Spirit through which there’s a love so high, deep, and wide on all sides that it engulfs you for a full 360 degrees and He wants to share it with you. Spending time with The Father, learning more about Him reveals not only more of Him, but more of you. Psalms 139:1-4 NIV says; “You have searched me, Lord, and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue You, Lord, know it completely.” No one knows you better than The Lord! So, who better to search out, than your Heavenly Father!

The word contemplate, in 2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV, means to ponder thoughtfully. In setting aside worries at hand and pressing personal desires, to gaze upon the greatness of the Lord in inquiry about Him for a few minutes throughout your day, God’s revelation of Himself will cause you to grow as He begins to refresh and restore you to His image and likeness as He originally intended you to be. It’s also seed sown that reaps peace into your soul by occupying your mind with His infinite and vast goodness and wisdom.

As you turn your face to face God, you’ll begin to see that, just as a young child finds himself or herself in its parent as he/she observes and thinks over what’s seen, you’ll find yourself in your Heavenly Father. Our Magnificent and Loving Father’s plan has been to restore all of us and our world to His original design. The word Eden, from The Garden of Eden, has an original Hebrew root meaning of “delight”, “pleasant”. Though this process of getting you to a delightful and pleasant life is not instantaneous, you are free, brother/sister in Christ, to live out your full Sovereign inheritance! In God, you are not helpless, and can now decide not to forfeit the Power within you. You are one of a kind! A special and rare edition to this world! You are a unique expression of God’s creativity! By the Power of the Lord Jesus, recognize it, touch it, be it, live it as the image that reflects back at you, in the mirror of the Word of God, reveals the full true you in Christ!

Prayer to See Your Face in The Father’s Face

Most Gracious and Loving God, I come to You to learn and understand according to Your supreme wisdom more about You, Lord, so that my love, for You first and foremost, others and myself, may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight. Please remove anything blocking the eyes of my heart and make known to me the path of my life, and fill me with joy in Your presence.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
