“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” Matthew 9:16,17 NIV
Where we came from can often seem so much easier than where we’re headed. It is what is known. It seems comfortable. And, it appears to be less threatening. Often, we may be at the precipice of great opportunity to move into something else exciting, freeing, and more fitting to who God made us to be, but we stay put in, or go back to, a lifestyle that offers perceived safety or peace. Like Jesus was explaining to His listeners in the given verses, however, old ways of living that no longer or never worked, needs to be put aside, left behind and replaced with the new one He provides.
There is a life of fulfillment waiting for you ahead; one filled with peace, love, and joy! Whatever God has placed into your heart has chances to be brought to fruition with each alteration of life no matter how it’s prompted. But, changes require you to stretch and leave old ways and thought patterns behind. Actually doing that can be daunting to many of us, but what’s more painful is knowing you have something great inside of you and bursting because you won’t let go and stretch.
Your new life that’s no longer filled with grueling unproductive results is in your reach, but you may need to let go of others who’re not stretching with you. The healing of past experiences you’ve been attempting to repair by patching up on your own, keep eluding you. Let go of those tempting old tactics, stretch your hand to Jesus and your mind around His Word. Let go of what no longer gives you intrinsic joy, and stretch to grasp what does.
At times, the future can look very dim, causing you to be perplexed wondering how you’re going to make it. The place you’re in right now may even be a bit painful. Remember though, God works “with” your past, not “in” your past! What He asked you to drop before, was done so you can have freed hands to grab your gift of life now.
You may be thinking this all sounds easier said than done, and I won’t kid you, it is… when we attempt to do it alone, in our own strength. But that’s why we have a Mighty God to lean on! For He said, “…’Not by strength and not by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord who rules over all.” Know you don’t need to continue to handle things your own way due to not understanding what The Lord may be doing in your future. So, whatever you fear in going forward, surrender it to Him, knowing He’ll work things together for the good and He’s got you thoroughly covered! Using the starter prayer below, make today the day you decide to use a new mindset to store the new possibilities that Christ has for you!
“Lord God, I know nothing is impossible for You, and I can do all things through You as You strengthen me. Help me overcome any unbelief, remove my doubts. God that provides, I ask that You grant me the sight to see and the ears to hear all that You place in front of me to help me to continue to never look back to that which I must forget and let go. Grant me the boldness I need to take each step forward in faith, no matter how much of the path is hidden from my sight, so I can grasp the New things You are doing for me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
